Synopsis

Set in 11th-century Europe, the story follows Thorfinn, the son of one of the Vikings' greatest warriors, Thors. After witnessing his father’s unfair death at the hands of the mercenary leader Askeladd, Thorfinn joins his band of killers, not out of loyalty, but for the sole purpose of challenging Askeladd to a legal duel to avenge his father. While the first half of the saga (the "Prologue") focuses on the bloody Viking invasion of England and the political rise of Prince Canute, the story takes a drastic turn afterward. It explores Thorfinn’s personal journey of atonement as he reflects on the cycle of violence and his father’s final lesson—that a "true warrior" needs no sword. Thorfinn eventually sets his sights on finding a fabled land across the ocean, a place called Vinland, where people can live in peace away from the wars of the Old World.
