Synopsis

In the year 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact, the world faces a new threat: "Angels," monstrous alien beings with near-invincible defenses. Traditional weapons are useless against them, leading the UN special agency NERV to develop the Evangelions—giant humanoid bio-machines. The story follows Shinji Ikari, a socially isolated 14-year-old who is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his cold and estranged father, Gendo, the head of NERV. Shinji is thrust into the cockpit of Evangelion Unit-01, forced to defend humanity despite his deep-seated psychological trauma and fear. As the battles escalate, the focus shifts from mecha warfare to a deconstruction of the characters' mental states, ultimately exploring the nature of human connection and the "Human Instrumentality Project."
